ARTIST STATEMENT
My paintings begin in uncertainty. Layer upon layer accumulates, creating surfaces that evoke the passage of time and the remnants of history. Working intuitively and without a predetermined outcome, I build these grounds through a process related to Surrealist automatic drawing, allowing chance and instinct to guide the work.
As forms emerge, I respond through a series of choices that gradually shape the painting’s identity. In this way, the process reflects Sartre’s notion that “existence precedes essence”—the work’s significance is not predetermined but emerges through the act of making.
The recurring arch found in some works functions as both a visual threshold and a quiet reference to spiritual iconography. Emerging from the layered surface, it offers a gesture toward hope and the possibility of transcendence.
